Scanning Device Provides 3D Image of Patients’ Insides

Amazingly enough and sooner than we could think, doctors could end up using a stunning 3D scanning device that would provide images of patients’ insides. This would totally change the way medicine is practiced thanks to the world of 3D scanning. Indeed, using optical coherence tomography, a near-infrared light source, a video camera as well as a special mechanism to control the light, it is possible to obtain 3D images of what is going on inside patients without actually performing any incisions whatsoever.

The secret of such a technology is rather simple in its own way, the near-infrared light used penetrates body tissues more deeply than do other types of light due to its frequency. Subsequently, the light that is reflected is caught by the scanning device, which in turn builds a 3D image of a patient’s insides.

It is believed as well as hoped that this is the beginning of a stunning journey where physicians could avail themselves of this technology right in their office and thereby be in a better position to diagnose a series of illnesses or conditions that could not be detected through a regular, everyday medical examination. Not to mention the radical impact that this scanning device could have in developing countries. Although this may take a while to become reality, the team involved in this endeavor has been awarded a substantial grant to pursue the mission and perfect their design so that it may become more mainstream medical practice.
